A bevy of local and national celebrities and business leaders descended on the Grand Ballroom at Atlanta’s Hyatt Regency Hotel to honor one of the nation’s most deserving unsung heroes of our time. The evening consisted of family, friends, mentees, and business associates telling many heretofore-untold stories about their meetings and dealings with ‘Tommy,’ including some interesting details about his first date with his loving and supportive wife of 22 years, Carole. There were plaques of thanks and recognition presented to Mr. Dortch for his years of leadership in the mentoring, political and business communities. From Susan L. Taylor to Bishop Eddie Long to Xernona Clayton, the two words most often used by everyone that evening was “true friend” when describing what Tommy Dortch Jr. is to each of them. William Settles from Delta was there to present Mr. and Mrs. Dortch with round-trip tickets to anywhere in the world, for them to enjoy a well-deserved vacation. – randy fling
