2007 j.a.m. awards and concert: a tribute to jam master jay

Scene: Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City, Nov. 29, 2007

Players: Terri Corley-Mizell, Kid Capri, EPMD, Snoop Dogg, DMC, Rev. Run, De La Soul, Mobb Deep, Jim Jones, Raekwon, Dead Prez, DJ Scratch, Q-Tip, M.O.P.

Spotlight: To celebrate the legacy of Jam Master Jay who was murdered in 2005

Net Effect: It was a night of celebration and hip-hop during the 2007 J.A.M. Awards & Concert. The event was organized and hosted by the late hip-hop pioneer’s widow, Terri Mizell, who said the event was planned to promote her husband’s vision for Justice, Arts and Music (J.A.M.).

De La Soul hit the stage and blessed the audience with some of their hit songs before Mobb Deep’s Prodigy represented his crew, performing the songs “Shook Ones” and “Quiet Storm.” Keeping the night’s purpose in the forefront, Prodigy told the audience, “It ain’t Run’s house tonight, it’s Jam Master Jay’s house.” Snoop Dogg, dedicated his set to Jay and worked the crowd into a frenzy with songs like “Gin and Juice,” “G Thing” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Other acts that paid tribute to Jay’s legacy were Papoose, Jim Jones and LL Cool J, who surprised fans during EPMD’s set.

The night wasn’t just about performances, however. Three awards were also presented in the categories of Justice (Chuck D), Arts (Lee Quionones), and Music (Wyclef Jean). Wu-Tang’s Raekwon closed the night out, reminding the crowd to keep Jay’s spirit alive. “We gotta keep our legends alive,” he said. “Let’s not forget who got us here.” –ivory jones
