Hip-hop has transformed itself from a culture rooted in neglect and poverty,
into a billion-dollar industry. However, some of its most ardent fans still find themselves
in dreadful financial situations. Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, the Hip-
Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) and Chrysler Financial, recently brought
the Get Your Money Right financial seminar to the Washington Convention Center
in Washington, D.C.
Moderated by HSAN president and CEO Dr. Ben Chavis and Free, the seminar’s
panel consisted of Simmons, Mya, Bun B, Lyfe Jennings, Big Daddy Kane,
LeToya Luckett and Lil’ Mo. Some of the topics discussed were money management,
paying off student loans and the importance of maintaining a high Fair
Isaac & Co. (FICO) credit score. Simmons believes that the absence of financial
empowerment in urban communities stems from a lack of information that
should be provided by educational systems. “One of the things wrong with the schools today is that they don’t teach financial
literacy,” Simmons said. “The little simple things like your credit score and how it will affect you are not taught in our schools. So
as a result, most of our kids end up suffering in the long run.”–amir shaw
