Chicago

Labor Day weekend was the time for Chicagoans of color to revel in their African roots. At the South Side's Washington Park, a bevy of vendors and patrons celebrated with art, culture and music. Sunshine was in abundance, and the smell of food and incense from the Second City's best restaurants filled the air. There was plenty of live music to entertain the crowd as hip-hop, jazz, gospel and traditional African music were featured throughout the weekend. Children enjoyed face painting while the adults shopped and mingled. The event was a success and a great ode to summer as school started the following day. Chicago's youth were able to celebrate their history, among their people, in their community - truly a beautiful thing. - delgie jones II
