wayne county and the music hall present: jazz on the river

shoulda been there

With summer heading into the home stretch, the  Motor City’s unofficial moniker “Doing it in Detroit,” sounded more like the lyrics from the jazz classic, “Rock Creek Park.” Remember “doing it in the park, doing it after dark ...” Well that park is Elizabeth Park, nestled downriver at the foot of West Jefferson Avenue in the quaint and historic hamlet of Trenton. Lifelong Detroiters have been visiting the  recreational oasis for years to play and relax along the park’s riverfront and dock at its  picturesque marina.

Elizabeth Park’s annual Jazz on the River event hosted by Wayne County Parks and Recreation Department, invited area residents to break out the lawn chairs and sunblock, and pick a spot on the impeccably manicured lawn to spend the weekend listening to top shelf acts like Spyro Gyra, Ronnie Laws, and Ursula Walker with the Buddy Budson Trio, among other celebrated jazz performers.

Land loving music enthusiasts weren’t the only ones getting in on  the act. Dozens of boats anchored just off shore also soaked up the sights and sounds. Big D residents and visitors from as far away as Saginaw, Flint, Toledo and Chicago came out to barbecue kabobs and lamb chops, and enjoy a full day of comraderie and people watching.

During a time when vacations are limited to shorter stays closer to home, an event like this one guarantees you’ll get more than your money’s worth. –roz edward
