The Atlanta Workforce Development Agency has teamed up with Atlanta Technical College to offer real-world business experience to students under the auspices of Colgate-Palmolive’s Entrepreneurial Mentoring Preparing Our World Through Education (EMPOWER) program.
The six-week EMPOWER program is an entrepreneurial workshop that offers a targeted curriculum designed to give students hands-on knowledge of the specifics of launching a business from conception to execution. Twenty-five students were selected from the Mayor’s Youth Program to present a business plan and vie for a chance to earn a $1,000 scholarship from Colgate-Palmolive.

“If we did not have commitment from sponsors [for] a program of this magnitude, [this workshop] would not be possible,” said Dr. Alvetta Peterman Thomas, president of Atlanta Technical College.

“A lot of students want to go into business for themselves, [and with this program], these students will learn how to write a business plan [and] go into business for themselves,” said Deborah Lum, executive director of the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency. –michele fling, mary wali contributed reporting to this story
