The Houston International Festival celebrated its 37th year with a tribute to Africa. The double-weekend experience was jam-packed with loads of family fun and a wide variety of entertainment.
The Houston International Festival is one of the leading presenters of world music anywhere on the planet. The festival, known as “Out of Africa,” is held on over 16 acres in downtown Houston, effectively turning the city’s streets into a sidewalk safari. The festival boasts six international entertainment-themed zones. Each zone paid homage to a different African culture. The themed venues were sponsored by Bud Light, Washington Mutual, The Houston Chronicle, HEB and Target among others. More than 500 artists from around the world came out to sell their handmade arts, accessories and clothing, while more than 50 Houston restaurants and caterers offered their own culinary perspectives on international cuisine.
Mixed with the great aroma of exotic foods and striking arts and crafts were the melodic tunes of featured artists Buddy Guy, Step Rideau, the Wailers, and the Neville Brothers along with a host of other international artists and local bands.
