Mayor Kilpatrick poses with supporters prior to the event. |
BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Often uproarious, frequently contentious, and definitely provocative in nature, Pancakes for Politics: Economy, Regionalism, and Race Relations Revisited, saw leaders induce laughter with witty retorts while engaging in verbal gunplay over the visit of the infamous Rev. Jeremiah Wright to Detroit. The forum was designed to encourage political leaders from the Tri-County area surrounding Detroit to engage in constructive discussions. The breakfast panel discussion consisted of; Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Macomb County Board of Commissioners William Crouchman, and L. Brooks Patterson, the Oakland County Executive.

The Detroit metropolitan area has been besieged by hostile economic forces: ambushed by automotive downsizing; assailed by the foreclosure epidemic; embarrassed nationally by Kilpatrick’s text-messaging scandal; and beset with chronic racial animosity. Newspaper reports call the Motor City the nation’s most segregated metropolitan region. The Pancakes for Politics forum, which was facilitated by the Michigan Chronicle and hosted by Carol Cain of Michigan Matters, enabled the leaders to construct political and cultural bridges in order to mutually benefit the economically depressed region.
