The American Diabetes Association held its very successful fifth annual Diabetes Expo at Chicago’s Navy Pier on April 12, 2008. The health event, which was sponsored by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, was open to the general public and provided helpful information and advice for diabetics and non-diabetics about living more active and healthy lifestyles. “If your loved one has diabetes, or is at high risk of developing the disease, the Diabetes Expo provides a fun, relaxed environment to learn a great deal about the important aspects of prevention and management of diabetes and its serious complications,” said Nancy Harris, senior executive director of the ADA. Expo attendees who visited the Walgreen’s station received diabetes risk assessments, which included glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure testing. Fourth year students from the William Scholl College conducted foot screenings to detect levels of touch sensation or the lack thereof, which is a key identifying factor in detecting diabetes. VSP Vision Care, which provides vision insurance to more than 54 million people, was on hand with a mobile clinic to provide free screenings. According to the ADA, diabetes ranks as the fifth leading cause of death in the nation, making early diagnosis and treatment critical in the fight against the incurable disease.
