dr. maya angelou’s 80th birthday
celebration at the woodruff arts center
happy birthday
“Relevant, riveting and revolutionary,” are the words teary-eyed actress Nicole Parker used to describe Dr. Maya Angelou at her 80th birthday celebration, held at the Woodruff Arts Center. Director and filmmaker Tyler Perry and actress Lynn Whitfield hosted the star-studded bash. Quincy Jones extended kind words to the accomplished poet laureate, calling her a “beacon of light in a sometimes very darkened world, ” admitting that he couldn’t imagine this world without her.
Performers included Ballethnic Dance Company, Israel & New Breed, Desiree Coleman Jackson, Candi Station and the Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Survivors Choir.
Proceeds from the birthday celebration will benefit the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA, and country singer Daron Norwood. –yvette caslin
