Sweeney Todd:
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Dreamworks Home Entertainment

Based on the Broadway musical, Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, once again pairs Johnny Depp with the visionary genius of Tim Burton. The result of this pairing is a tour de force of dark gothic humor that proves that revenge is a dish best served cold. A cruel Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) tears a young barber, Benjamin Barker’s (Johnny Depp) life apart once he takes a liking to his wife. Fifteen years later, Barker is back in town with revenge on his mind. The movie proudly flaunts its R rating as Sweeny Todd practices his brand of cutting-edge vengeance among the locals. This is easily the best and bloodiest musical I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing on film. Plus, it’s good to see Alan Rickman play the bad guy again. But whatever you do watch out for those meat pies. –dark abyss

Human Giant: Season One
MTV Home Entertainment

MTV may not specialize in music videos anymore, but comedic fare like this will certainly produce high ratings for the entertainment titan. In “Human Giant: Season One,” Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer and director Jason Woliner bring a series of comedy sketches that are sheer genius. In the first 10 minutes, the Shutterbugs, a group of heartless child talent agents, rag a little girl and kick her out of their office. Later, a couple of guys voluntarily get attacked by ferocious dogs in order to inspire sympathy for themselves. The result leaves viewers in stitches. This uncensored package contains the show’s entire first season and lots of bonus footage. It’s truly a rare find.

The Cellar Door
Monterey Media

If you’ve seen the movie Captivity, then you kind of know what to expect from The Cellar Door. A deranged guy picks up girls, puts them in a cage and shows them some “tough” love in a secluded basement. But for some reason, I like The Cellar Door better than Captivity. Maybe it’s because Herman is cooler than the deranged guy in Captivity. Maybe it’s because The Cellar Door focuses more on the cat and mouse aspect of Herman and his victim, not the torture.  Even though it’s not clear why Herman is doing all of this, it doesn’t matter. We just watch and enjoy. Despite the somewhat campy ending, The Cellar Door puts forth a good effort. –dark abyss

Gene Simmons Family Jewels:
The Best of Seasons 1 & 2
A&E

I never fathomed when the Osbourne’s hit the airwaves that it would ever be the huge hit it became. Even more amazing is that this show started a whole reality TV industry. Everyone who ever had any face time on TV had a reality show. Some were good, a lot were bad. Fortunately, Gene Simmons’ show is one of the better ones. Like the Osbourne’s, we get a glimpse into the life of a true rock ‘n’ roll icon. The family is likeable and some of the situations they get into are pretty funny. If reality TV really does it for you, this best of “Gene Simmons Family Jewels” show is a must-have. Kiss fans may want to check out this DVD to see what Gene is like when he’s not on stage. –dark abyss
