chrysler’s behind the lens award
on the scene
It’s been a long time coming. But for the ever-gracious Spike Lee, recipient of the Chrysler LLC 2008 Behind the Lens Award, the lofty honor was much appreciated. In its sixth year of existence, Chrysler and the Behind the Lens Award committee have gone to great lengths to highlight and honor African American trailblazers in entertainment. Past honorees include: producer and composer Quincy Jones; directors Gordon Parks, Melvin Van Peebles and John Singleton; as well as Hollywood casting veteran and producer Reuben Cannon.
Lee has been influential in launching the careers of Hollywood heavyweights such as Halle Berry, Samuel L. Jackson, John Turturro, Wesley Snipes and Denzel Washington. W. Frank Fountain, Chrysler’s senior vice president of external affairs and public policy, and a trailblazer in his own right, was on hand to share in the historic moment.
On this momentous occasion, Hollywood joined with Chrysler in recognizing Lee for his many accomplishments, as well as for his unwavering commitment to uplifting, inspiring and empowering the black community. Well done, Mr. Lee. –dewayne rogers
