muffy
destined for greatness
on the rise
Everyone wants to be great, but few are equipped with the talent, drive and wherewithal to actually realize such lofty aspirations. Burgeoning star Muffy is one such artist, and all it takes is a single encounter to confirm that she was indeed born and bred for greatness.
Born in Detroit, and raised in New Jersey, this extraordinary talent has found the fertile soils of Atlanta to be ripe ground to both cultivate and harvest her rich talent. While others have been quick to place labels on Muffy’s otherworldly exploits, the artist herself feels less compelled to attach her music and style to any particular genre.
“I think my style is indescribable,” she reveals. “I really don’t know who to compare myself to. A lot of people say that I remind them of Madonna or Cyndi Lauper, but I’m really just me. When you experience my music, what you’ll find is that it’s really fun music that makes it hard for you to sit still.”
While her ability to keep the crowd moving has certainly given Muffy a platform to achieve paramount levels of success, her real desires not only focus on her own personal triumphs, but also keep an eye towards the empowerment of women. “I was always raised to believe that I could accomplish anything that I set [my] mind to,” she explains. “I’ve always wanted to encourage other women to embrace that same mind-set. That’s why we started the Yummie Pops, a collection of talented women who are pushing and encouraging each other to be successful. Having a great support system is something that we all need, so I hope to provide that support to other women.”

Estelle
Location: London
Age: 28
Check her out if you like: Corinne Bailey Rae, Lauryn Hill
Download: “American Boy” featuring Kanye West
Visit: www.MySpace.com/estelleonline
Estelle is continuing in the recent tradition of British soul sirens (Corinne Bailey Rae, Amy Winehouse), but the cocoa-skinned beauty is no mockingbird — she is as formidable an MC as she is a vocalist. Born in West London to a Senegalese mother and a Grenadan father, the dynamic vocalist christened Fanta Estelle Swaray debuted in 2004 with the well-received The 18th Day, but her 2008 follow-up, Shine, featuring Kanye West and Cee-Lo is shaping up to be one of 2008’s most highly anticipated albums and should launch this soon-to-be diva into the stratosphere. –malachi winchester |

Emily King
Location: NYC
Age: 22
Check her out if you like: Joan Osbourne, India.Arie
Download: “U & I”
Visit: www.MySpace.com/emilykingmusic
A Lower East Side hipster chick with a serious hip-hop jones, Emily King’s music is almost like a sonic pastiche of New York City’s eclectic styles and musical heritage. She combines the lilting earnestness of Carly Simon and the retro-soul of Maxwell with a dash of B-girl badness, á la MC Lyte. The daughter of jazz performers, King’s love of music covers a wide array of tastes, and her debut, East Side Story, all of those influences coalesce into something musically familiar yet daring. King blurs genres and eras, and if you’re looking for a singer-songwriter with a transcendent voice and a knack for introspection, look no further. –malachi winchester |

Holly Weerd
Location: Atlanta
Check them out if you like: OutKast, the Talking Heads
Download: “Weerdo”
Visit: www.MySpace.com/hollyweerd
Vowing to lead you into “a land where rejects and weirdos reign supreme,” the collective known as Holly Weerd take up the digi-funky mantle of Speakerboxxx-era OutKast and add their own psychedelic/new wave/art rock sensibilities to the mix. The Dreamer, Tuki, Staggo Lee, and The Love Crusade infuse their trippy beats with an ethereal whimsy practically unheard of urban music, with an idiosyncratic intelligence that hearkens back to golden-age A Tribe Called Quest and some of David Byrne’s finest work. –malachi winchester |
