the world watches – debate watch party
shoulda been there

The world is watching as anticipation builds over the outcome of America’s 2008 presidential election. America has shown an unprecedented fervor for two candidates whose candidacy in previous years would have been unimaginable. Is America ready to have an African American or woman at its helm? The election of either candidate would represent a long-awaited paradigm shift in American politics.

Supporters of Barack Obama are fired up about his candidacy and represent a wide and disparate swath of the electorate. The Illinois senator is doing well with young and black voters, and in the most recent primaries in the Potomac region, he ran head-to-head with Hillary Clinton among white voters and women.

Sen. Clinton’s supporters appreciate her tenacity and experience. Many want to relive what is fondly remembered as the ‘Clinton years.’

The Future Leaders of the 13th Congressional District, the Detroit NAACP Young Adult Committee and Ajene Cheeks Evans recently hosted Election 2008: Who Is Your Candidate? The Congressional Black Caucus Presidential Debate Watch Party and Dialogue was held at Club TV, as young political leaders discussed the future of our nation.

“The goal was to encourage young professionals to think critically about the issues facing our nation and being intentional about participating in the political process. I think the event was highly successful and one of many similar events to come,” said Marja Winters, chair of The Future Leaders of the 13th Congressional District. –tiffany d. tilley and terry shropshire
