Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will forever be idolized for his indestructible faith and courage. His fight for social justice through nonviolent protest transcended the dividing lines of race, creed and economic status.

Dr. King’s message to the nation was a paradigm shift in thinking for a people who were immersed in a relentless struggle to defeat segregation and subjugation.

Celebrating the passions, perseverance and influence of the civil rights legend, is a time-honored tradition that keeps his dream alive within the hearts of all people. In honor of Dr. King’s legacy, Downriver Young Democrats and Midtown Democrats held their First Annual MLK Downriver Breakfast at the Silver Spoon. Labor leaders, activists and elected officials, including Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, and Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett attended the breakfast. Representatives from the United Steelworkers, the United Auto Workers, and the Michigan Teamsters were also present.

“It is a fitting time to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy; in an election season with a bright and eloquent senator of mixed heritage, as well as a determined New York senator who happens to be a woman. The first annual MLK Breakfast was a rare opportunity for proud citizens in the Downriver area to celebrate progress made. The purpose of our event was to revive a spirit of pride and to help young people of historically underrepresented groups to participate in the electoral process ...,” said Michael Mendez, treasurer of Downriver Young Democrats.
