will barack obama turn his back on black america?

With Barack Obama’s latest victory over Hillary Clinton in Mississippi’s Democratic primary, the Illinois senator regained momentum and has put himself one step closer to becoming the Democratic nominee for president. If Obama defeats Clinton, a poll done by Survey USA suggests that he will edge out John McCain to become the 44th president of the United States of America. But as the first black president on American soil, will Obama succumb to the pressure of shunning black leadership and issues in order to appear unbiased?

During a recent debate against Clinton, Obama was asked by Tim Russert if he accepted the endorsement of Minister Louis Farrakhan. Obama responded by saying, “I did not solicit his support. And we’re not doing anything, I assure you formally or informally, with Minister Farrakhan.” Upon being challenged further by Clinton, who apparently overlooked the fact that Bill Clinton praised Farrakhan in 1995 after the Million Man March, Obama “rejected and denounced” Farrakhan’s support. Obama has also denounced and removed Rev. Jeremiah Wright from his campaign after media criticism of Wright’s controversial, but true, assessment of America’s racial inequality.

By yielding to the pressures that caused him to distance himself from two respected leaders in the black community, Obama may have put himself in a position to be labeled as another spineless black political figure who is afraid of speaking up for issues that trouble black Americans. Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice have all gained commendable political power only to be viewed as race traitors by many blacks.

However, black Americans must understand that Obama has to walk a fine line in his quest for history. The status quo will continue to question his affiliation and views in an attempt to alienate him from specific groups. It’s very unlikely that he will follow the same political ideologies that have burdened Thomas, Powell and Rice. Obama proved in his latest speech in Philadelphia that his latest miscues are not a sign of things to come.amir shaw

clinton ex-aide upchucks asinine comments out of her decayed mouth

One of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s ex-aides managed to crack open the aperture in the middle of her time-weathered head, and out dribbled some of the most befouled political exhalations I’ve had the displeasure of absorbing in a long time. Former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro had the audacity — the unmitigated gall — to say the only reason Sen. Barack Obama is perched in the catbird seat is because he is a black man. How is it remotely possible that, as a member of the most maligned and vilified demographic in America, Obama is suddenly and inexplicably receiving preferential treatment because of his skin color??!! I missed the memo that stated that racism had not only been eradicated, but, in a miraculous 180-degree turn, my mahogany melanin has become an advantage in American society.

Excuse me while the contents inside my skull empty out through my ears.

I haven’t heard something that reeked of such absurdity, such absolute preposterousness, since tennis legend Martina Navratilova said that the Williams sisters — Venus and Serena — were being handled with kid gloves by the media and the tennis tour because they were black females in an all-white sport. Forget the fact that they demonstrated superior talent as evidenced by their 13 Grand Slam victories.

It was interesting to listen to the deafening silence from the Clinton camp following Ferraro’s foolish remarks. Perhaps, Ms. Ferraro, and somehow this didn’t manage to cross your mind, Obama is the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination because: he boasts a near unblemished record of achievement that rivals any political candidate of the modern era; he is a Harvard Law graduate, the Ivy League school’s first African American editor of its Law Review; that he ran a successful career as a state senator and staunch community advocate; he then became a national star because of his captivating oratorical skills after he became a U.S. senator. If Obama is beating Sen. Clinton simply because of his ethnicity, then every black man in America could run and win (just like you, Ms. Ferraro didn’t ascend to the Democratic vice presidential nomination based on your physical attributes. Well, we hope not). Perhaps there’s a little more to explain Obama’s prominent place in American politics, Ms. Ferraro. terry shropshire
