midterm grades: convertibles

2007 Ford Mustang GT
Grade: A

In 2007, Ford Mustang returned with the legendary GT. The grandfather of all convertibles, this year’s version took pieces of its signature look and incorporated new features that will cause Mustang fans to fall in love all over again. For safety, the GT added a wide glass backlite and slim C-pillars that gives drivers better rear visibility. The GT’s engine remains powerful with its super 4.6-liter V-8 engine. - amir shaw

2007 Honda S2000
Grade: B

Honda’s reputation as a reliable car manufacture made the S2000 one of the most sought after convertibles in 2007. The two-seater comes with 17- inch wheels, keyless entry, xenon HID headlights and a power-operated top. Driving power is priceless with 8,000-rpm and a double-wishbone front and rear suspension that allows the car to maintain balance as it reaches high speeds. The S2000 proved that Honda has yet to lose its flair for quality.

2007 Volkswagen Eos
Grade: B-

The 2007 Volkswagen Eos proved that luxury and affordability can co-exist. Starting at under $30,000, the Eos comes with a glass top that makes lowering the top an experience in itself. Buyers have a choice of leather or cloth upholstery in the wood-trimmed interior. With a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Eos holds its own in the speed department. Volkswagen’s return to chic continued with the impressive Eos.

2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT
Grade: B

The Special features on the 2007 Eclipse Spyder GT included a technically advanced convertible top that folds under a flush-fitting power cover in less than 20 seconds. The 260-horsepower V6 engine goes from 0-to-60 mph in about 7 seconds. Safety features included advanced dual-stage front air bags and seat-mounted side air bags, and antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD).
