Over the past decade, rappers have demonstrated that their business acumen extends well beyond beats and rhymes. Leaders like Russell Simmons have created an economic dynamic that is impacting commerce across the globe. Hip-hop artists have established fashion lines that cater to urban communities, and their labels are gaining the prominence and status to rival the pre-eminent fashion houses of Gucci, Prada and Chanel.

Designs from Sean “Diddy” Combs, Russell Simmons and LL Cool J have redefined urban wear, producing originality and sophistication in contemporary menswear. Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z has become a fashion forecaster, turning in his jerseys for chic Bottega Venetia suits. The genre is growing up and these industry leaders are reflecting that maturity through elegant designs. Myorr Janha, VP of marketing and public relations for Russell Simmon’s Argyle Culture says, “I’m at the age where I don’t want to wear a hoodie and baggy jeans every day — I don’t want to wear what that 12-year-old is wearing. It’s the natural growth of a young man.”

In keeping with its reputation of building intuitive relationships with consumers in the urban market, Macy’s has been an avid supporter of these fashion houses’ eclectic lines from their inception. Macy’s endorsement and promotion of hip-hop-preneurs not only helped enhance the fashion profile of urban dwellers nationwide, it boosted the aforementioned music moguls-designers to household name status on Main Street and Wall Street.

Urban street wear has unquestionably joined hands with the Ivy League. Casual wear has taken the fast track in to a more relaxed territory through the addtion of pastels and khaki colors, and downplaying the sloppy look.
