when the going gets tough

Pickup trucks have developed a reputation for being brawny vehicles that are primarily for hauling chopped lumber and large equipment. However, several manufacturers have recently added amenities that give pickup trucks more overall appeal. In this week’s edition of ro rides, we highlight the top pickup trucks built to handle the rigors of heavy-duty work while providing style, safety and comfort.

2008 Ford F-150

What makes it tough: The 2008 Ford F-150 comes with a 5.4-liter Triton V8 engine that produces up to 365 pound-feet of torque and 300 horsepower. Equipped with a 6.5-ft. cargo bed, the F-150 has a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds.

Why it’s more than a pickup truck: Since its overhaul in 2001, the F-150 impressively combines toughness with style.
This year’s model features chrome exterior trim, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, smoked tail lights and 18-inch alloy wheels.

2008 Toyota Tundra

What makes it tough: Although a few car experts have criticized past versions of the Tundra for its lack of power, the 2008 model has what it takes to spar with the big boys. It is equipped with a superior 5.7-liter V8 engine that gets the Tundra from zero to 60 in only 6.3 seconds, and the revamped pickup can tow 10,800 pounds.

Why it’s more than a pickup truck: The 2008 Tundra offers 44.5 inches of rear leg room and can seat five adults.
Other notable features include a backup camera, navigation system and driver seat memory.

2008 GMC Sierra 1500

What makes it tough: The GMC Sierra 1500 is the perfect pickup truck for off-road handling. With rear-wheel and four-wheel drive capabilities, the GMC Sierra 1500 allows drivers to navigate effortlessly through treacherous terrains. Those who are looking for an exemplary muscle truck will be more than satisfied by the Sierra’s 6.5-ft. cargo bed and 6.0-liter V8 engine.

Why it’s more than a pickup truck: GMC enhances the overall experience of driving the Sierra by adding keyless entry, heated front seats, and OnStar navigation.
Safety features include the StabiliTrak electronic stability system and airbags along the side windows for deployment in the event of a rollover accident.
