Co-Hosts, Mason Radio
To anyone that has lived in or visited the city of Detroit during the past three decades, the name John Mason will be quite familiar. Mason is the man who outfitted Detroit with the signature Pistons’ battle cry, “Deeeeeeeetroit Basketball” and is the former voice of countless popular morning radio shows.
After facing the sobering reality of being an aging personality in the harsh world of entertainment, Mason decided that he wasn’t going to give up. He would do radio again, but he would do it his way.
“I never wanted to [be an independent],” Mason admits regarding his decision to step out on his own. “I was forced to do it because no radio company wanted me and [they] said my day was already gone.”
Mason came up with an idea and reached out to other displaced radio professionals to begin rebuilding Detroit’s 107.5 WGPR The Rhythm.
Radio co-Host Angie Starr agrees. “Mason brought me to Mason Radio [with] his vision [and] his dream. I’ve worked in radio a long time and I’ve always [wanted] to work with someone who truly believed in independence, the community, [and] really helping people with that medium. Well, that’s what Mason believes in — giving real information, not just junk.”
Determination and dedication are key to Mason Radio’s push to show the world that good radio isn’t dictated by age, but by passion and integrity.
“We’re still working on the on-air presentation,” he reveals. “We’re at about 48 percent of the on-air presentation. So, we’ve got a huge mountain to climb and a long way to go before we can actually claim it as a real morning show.” – janaya black
