R&B crooner Mario sheds his adolescent persona on his newest project, Go. “I just think that there are certain things that you experience as a man, just like women experience things as women growing into that womanhood or manhood,” explains the J Records artist of his transition. “But because I’m a singer I’m able to write about it and express myself through my songs. [The album] touches a different side of me, it’s more personal.”
Go, his third album, features 14 songs and productions from Pharrell, Jermaine Dupri, Scott Storch, Alicia Keys, Timbaland and Akon. The reflective “Kryptonite” touches on his personal experience with love, while “Do Right” deals with his angst over his mother’s battle with drug addiction. “… It’s my best record so far. I know a lot of artists say that, but I say that because it’s more introspective and [offers] a deeper insight as to who I am as a person,” he says.
Mario is banking on his fans understanding his personal and professional metamorphosis. “When I say personal, I mean personal with this record,” he reiterates. “I definitely think I’ve grown. My growth as a person and as an artist has been simultaneous. It’s not just about the music for me, so when you go out and buy the record, you’re supporting me as an artist [and] you’re also supporting me as a man. And that’s the real person that I am.” - janaya black and michele fling
