Founder and President, Cinemomma Pictures

Filmmaking is supposed to be a personal experience. That sentiment may seem, well, sentimental in this age of big-budget CGI-drenched Hollywood movies, but, fundamentally, a film is supposed to say something about a director. Cinemomma Pictures founder Camille Holder-Brown continues the proud tradition of personal filmmaking. "The films that I make are my therapy, they're cathartic for me," says Brown. "I want to do films that deal with empowering the family. I studied anthropology and film - so I merge the two. I'm very much an 'anthropological' filmmaker."

Born in New York, and raised in Daytona before returning to the Big Apple, Holder-Brown's love for film began in front of the camera. "I was doing more acting and modeling when I was younger," she explains. "I realized that I would be subjected to whatever roles Hollywood had for me, so I decided that I'd better get behind the scenes." Her latest film, A Period Piece, tells the story of a girl who's terrified of crossing the threshold into womanhood, and it has garnered rave reviews in independent film circles.

"I like Woody Allen and Spike Lee," shares Brown. "All of [Allen's] films are about relationships." Like her contemporaries, Brown believes in carving her own niche, and in working on projects one is passionate about. "I know artists have to eat, but at the same time, be dedicated - it doesn't happen overnight. Don't worry about making a million films, make quality films that you can be proud of." -todd williams
