There are a lot of products on the market that claim to be natural. But, if you just flip to the label, you're likely to come across ingredients like xanthan gum or yellow dye No. 9. When Y.D. Owens set out to create a line of skin care essentials, she turned her kitchen into a lab and created a line of products that would make grandma proud.

"I grew up with my grandmother, who was a naturalist," Owens recalls. "She didn't believe in buying anything from the grocery store. She always believed in making things from the earth and being natural. When I went off to college, I started making a mask out of soy beans for my friends and [myself], to save money. I just decided to go on and share it with everyone else."

Owens is an engineer-turned-master cosmetic chef. The skin expert created iiwii freshT (itiz wat itiz), a chemical-free gourmet skin care line, whose product ingredients read like a grocery list of delicious veggies and fruits. Owens says she found that the same foods that nourish and strengthen the body are just as beneficial for skin care.

"As I began doing research, I realized a lot of the chemicals in skin products do a lot of damage," says Owens. "Internally, they're scarring the skin, long term. With iiwii, we're all-natural and made from scratch. Our products are so natural you have to refrigerate them." -adam jones
