Filmmaker, DJ Screw: The Untold Story
Bird recalls the day that DJ Screw encouraged him to become the official videographer for the Screwed Up Click. After Bird purchased a camcorder in the early `90s, DJ Screw believed that Bird could cultivate a skill by filming the crew’s studio sessions, concerts and road tours. However, he soon realized that he was recording history. Several years after capturing DJ Screw’s last days on film, Bird decided to honor his late mentor by releasing the documentary DJ Screw: The Untold Story.
“During the `90s, [the Screwed Up Click] had some of Houston’s best rappers with Lil’ KeKe, Big Hawk, Big Pokey and Fat Pat,” Bird says. “But while everybody else was rapping, I started to film. I just wanted to capture the entire atmosphere.”
To become more familiar with video production, Bird enrolled in college and received an associate’s degree in TV broadcasting.
“[DJ] Screw knew that I would be better at filming if I went to school for it,” Bird says. “He told me that I had the talent to be the next Ice Cube.”
Bird has taken DJ Screw’s advice by delving into other areas of entertainment. Along with producing and directing his first documentary, Bird has acted in the films Dirty 3rd, H-Town Hard Hitters and The American Dream.
With DJ Screw: The Untold Story receiving rave reviews at several film festivals, Bird hopes to bring DJ Screw’s life to the big screen in the form of a biopic. “DJ Screw has a story that everyone needs to see,” Bird says. “My goal is to make a movie that will touch people around the globe.”
