kid Capri - staying true
dj
With over 30 years in the music industry under his belt, it seems that DJ Kid Capri has found the formula for success. With both a new album, The Whole World Behind David Love, and label, No Kid’N Records, on the way, the legendary turntablist talks about the industry and what has helped keep him in the game. –ivory m. jones
Innovations such as Serato have seemingly made DJing easier. Do you believe that this is good or bad for the art?
I don’t think everybody’s a DJ. You go see them in the party and you can [spot] the ones who just love the glory of it or how it looks. [In that case], it’s the easy way out. I don’t look for the easy way out. Whether it’s with a computer or not, I give you a stage show and I don’t think a lot of DJs are doing that.
What has kept you from becoming disenchanted with the industry?
I never take things that seriously. I take my career seriously, but I also know that you’ve got to take the sun with the rain. I know that people would give their life up just to be at the level that I’m at today and I appreciate that every day. I’ve been in the business 32 years and have been known for 20 years. I can’t have a way of thinking like I thought 10 or 20 years ago.
What has been the key to your success?
When I came in the door, I wanted to make sure I was treated as an artist and not just as somebody playing records. Once I get on that stage, it doesn’t matter if you’re white, black, spotted or dotted; I’m on that a-- heavy.
