kerry washington - the girl can’t help it
She’s been one to watch in Hollywood ever since her breakthrough role in 1999s Save the Last Dance; and she’s gradually put together one of the more-enviable résumés in Hollywood. She’s appeared in a diverse array of films — ranging from dark thrillers to action shoot-‘em-ups, to romantic comedies and historical biopics. She’s proven to be an actress unafraid of taking risks; films like She Hate Me and The Last King of Scotland may have scared off a more timid actress with their controversial subject matter, but Washington seems to revel in keeping her audience guessing. And she’s always working, having appeared in three films in 2006, two in 2007, and three again in 2008. Today, it’s a cool day in Chicago, and, after her photo shoot, the Bronx-born beauty enters the interview suite with a gracious smile and a few pleasantries to the hangers-on.
Starring in the highly anticipated thriller Lakeview Terrace with Samuel L. Jackson and Trey Wilson, Washington has been doing a whirlwind of press lately, and answering questions about the suspense film — which has an intriguing plot that has been the center of much discussion. “It’s kind of a complicated film, but it’s basically a psychological thriller about a young couple that moves into a new neighborhood, and everything looks fine and dandy until one of their neighbors decides that he doesn’t like them — for a lot of reasons, including the fact that they’re an interracial couple,” she explains.
Washington and Jackson have a long-standing friendship and the actress was excited to get to work with one of the greatest screen actors of his generation. “I’ve known and been friends with him for a long time,” explains Washington. “I’ve [also] worked with his wife, Tanya, and the two of them have always been really supportive of me in my career and in my life.” –todd williams
