monica blaire - a daughter of detroit
Singer-Songwriter
Detroit’s local talent is alive, active and moving ahead at full force. Leading the pack is the popular singer, songwriter and emcee, MonicaBlaire. “There are two Detroits,” she says. “There’s the Detroit in the media and the reputation that comes from that, and there’s how Detroit is viewed musically. Nationally, we get a lot of love and people are floored and the city is revered for its musical accomplishments.”
The Detroit native has worked behind the scenes contributing her considerable talents to projects for the likes of gospel artist and PAJAM producer J. Moss and R&B singer Vanessa Williams, while developing her own considerable gifts. “I’m very motivated toward hip-hop and R&B. Every once in a while I mess around and free style and the combination of the two grew naturally into what is called my signature sound,” quips MonicaBlaire.
Having been mentored by one of Detroit’s favorite songstresses Ortheia Barnes, MonicaBlaire cut her teeth and honed her skills at such renowned local haunts as Doug’s Body Shop and Ortheiea’s Place. “Music courses through my veins. I’m a daughter of Detroit and I’m happy to be part of the present movement that’s happening right now,” she boasts.
MonicaBlaire solo debut album, Portraits of Me, has garnered rave reviews. The CD was as much an alternative neosoul affair as it was a showing of Detroit’s local finest with local MCs Miz Korona, Marv Won, Invincible and Guilty Simpson providing guest appearances. –roz edward
