Gospel Artist and Music Producer
One in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before age 18. It’s a statistic that gospel singer, Darwin Hobbs, knows too well. A victim of sexual abuse at the hands of his stepfather, Hobbs has finally decided to share his story of tragedy, healing and ultimately, freedom, with the world.
“I want to let people know that if you’re a victim of sexual abuse right now, you don’t have to be,” he says, mentioning that he didn’t feel the time was right to tell his story until his stepfather passed away recently.
Hobbs’ music has been a vital part of his healing process and working on his new album, Free was a cathartic experience. Claiming it’s his best album to date, he’s optimistic about the impact the record will have on listeners.
“The title track “Free” is really the glue of the album,” he says, spontaneously quoting lyrics from the song that speak to overcoming guilt and shame. “I was talking about my personal experience, but it’s really written so that anyone can relate to it.”
Hobbs has also established a recording label, Liaison Records featuring a five-man gospel group, Called II Worship, and has spearheaded an initiative to bring established artists and gospel leaders together to give advice to up-and-comers. Naming the effort the Call, it’s a bi-weekly conference call that will allow people eager to get instruction and be mentored in the business to engage in conversation with veteran singers and clergymen.
“For too long it’s been about what we can get from each other,” he says. “I just feel we need to shift and start trying to give things to each other.” – jacinta howard
