Playwright, Producer
“I’ve been an athlete for 35 years [and] I’ve been in filmmaking for 20 years ... but I’ve been a preacher’s kid all my life.” This statement captures the inspiration behind playwright, filmmaker and producer Alvin Daniels’ new project. After living the life of a so-called “preacher’s kid” (PK), Daniels decided to produce a play dedicated to all those other PKs out there.
Aptly titled Preacher’s Kid: The Untold Stories, it’s a collection of skits created around the firsthand accounts of PKs from around the country.
“The theme of the play is giving kids who share their parents with the world an opportunity to give their side of the story,” says Daniels, adding that because most people’s ideas about PKs are often distorted, the play aims to shine a light on children caught between secular and non-secular worlds.
“Because prea
cher’s kids are looked at in a bubble,” Daniels continues, “they don’t get the opportunity sometimes to explore and become themselves.”
Daniels summed up the vignettes saying, “Think of [the play] as gospel meets the TV show ‘In Living Color’… basically, you’re going to see very funny, yet witty, skits with a message.”
Aside from the play, Daniels stays busy. He just finished a feature length film, Hiding Places, and has developed a menswear athletic line called League Dude. He also teaches media classes at Northwestern University and Kennedy-King College.
“I am shifting my paradigm, which is what I teach my kids — don’t only be a good person in television, radio or film; marketing your product is just as important,” he concludes.
