Director and Actress, The Denied Mother
As creator of The Denied Mother, Barry Hand hopes to make theatregoers laugh, cry and heal relationships through his satirical play.
“I see a lot of broken relationships, and more so lately, I have been seeing them with mother and daughters,” shares Hand. “That’s really [where the play] ignited from.”
The play vividly depicts events that transpired when an aging mother, who endured Hurricane Katrina, moves in with her wealthy son and his testy wife. The family members struggle to adjust under one roof, and secrets surface in the process. For Hand, the play presents universal themes that affect all families. “I am hoping that [attendees] will see this and say, ‘Oh my God, maybe that’s me, or maybe that could become me,’ ” Hand acknowldges.
Alisa Hand-Hendels — Hand’s sister — plays the mother, Plasy McGhee. For 22 years, she has performed in her brother’s productions, including Woman at the Well and A House is Not a Home. “This is the best cast for me, but it’s also the toughest one as far as my acting because of the emotions … I’m picturing myself as that woman,” says Hand-Hendels.
Her brother agrees that most people will identify with the play’s characters. He also says the play’s examination of familial struggles will serve as a special treat for Mother’s Day weekend.
“Whether it’s with your aunt and her daughter or grandmother or mother, [the theme] is just so broad,” he says. “We go very deep into it. I tried not to hold anything back, I just let it rip. I would want mothers, daughters and sons to attend and see the story line. It’s an awesome play.”
