Rocko never underestimates the value of time. The self-proclaimed “busy man” usually foregoes sleep in order to plan the next sure-fire business idea. On his debut album, Self-Made, Rocko provides a hustler’s manual for turning time into money.
“As we speak, I’m thinking of another way to make money,” Rocko says during a recent interview at his video shoot for the single “Tomorrow.” “I’m like that because no one has ever given me anything. I busted my tail for everything that I received in life. I persevered to the point where I was able to do things, and I have always found ways to make myself better.”
Before Rocko picked up a microphone or created Rocky Road Records, he worked with artists such as Dem Franchize Boyz and Lil Flip. But after releasing the single “Umma Do Me,” in the summer of 2007, he was quickly recruited and signed to Def Jam Records. Rocko says he wanted to use the album to encourage others to strive for financial success. “I wanted to motivate my people like OutKast did, with the song ‘Git Up, Git Out.’ I’m hoping that I can touch some people so that they will get off the couch and make something of themselves.”
Although Rocko is considered a rookie in the rap game, he approaches the industry like a veteran. “If you want to be successful at something, you have to step out on faith,” he says. “I never look back because someone might be gaining on me. I know that you have to put it all on the line to get what you want.”
