Singer, Essential Ragga Hop
When reggae, hip-hop and R&B collide, “ragga-hop” emerges. That’s what independent songstress Ms. Triniti calls the cutting-edge rhythm that is making her a musical force to watch.
Born in London to a Trinidadian father and an American mother, Ms. Triniti made frequent trips to the Caribbean. The former professional tennis player credits her infectious beats to her multicultural background, which she hopes will bring her international stardom.
“I feel like I have all this music and all this creativity that I want to share,” she says. “And I hope that in five years that [the music] is a household name.”
The stage is set to do just that with her club-banger single, “Wi Burnin’ (woy yoy yoy),” on her upcoming album, Essential Ragga Hop, blazing up the charts. Last year, she performed on Sean Paul’s national tour and her single, “Bounce Along,” made the top 20 of BillBoard’s R&B and Hip-Hop charts. Signed to Columbia Records in 2003, then released in 2004, Ms. Triniti — also called the Caribbean Beyoncé — has accomplished more success than most independent artists. And it doesn’t end there.
The self-described, “one-woman show,” is developing a self-titled clothing line in Japan and a dance hall instructional video.
“It’s always very colorful, like in the Caribbean but it’s very earthy and very urban — kind of like a cross between those things,” she says of the clothing line’s offerings. “[It’s] kind of the same as my music and kind of the same as who I am as a person.”
Ms. Triniti’s authenticity is sure to help the multitalented beauty continue to transcend musical genres. –marissa mitchell
