At a time when the personal life of a celebrity often plays itself out in the general public via tabloids and gossip blogs, it is becoming increasingly difficult for stars to keep their private lives out of the public eye. However, for actor Richard Roundtree, best known for his role in the 1970s classic Shaft, the key to privacy is simple — just stick close to home.
“It’s much more pleasing to me to stay at home. The social events, I’m usually not ever seen at any of the social events,” he explains.
When he’s not staying close to the home front, Roundtree can be found hard at work in a wide array of roles. In 2006, he had a supporting role on the NBC hit supernatural series, “Heroes,” as Charles Deveaux. He also recently completed a stint alongside Vivica A. Fox in the stage play Whatever She Wants. Since most of Roundtree’s acting roles were either on television or on the big screen, he says he welcomed the change in pace that his theater role brought. “I don’t get to the stage very often, so when I do, I jump at the opportunity,” he says.
Up next for Roundtree is the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of Speed Racer. In the film, Roundtree portrays a former race car driver-turned-commentator and the main character’s hero. “It’s a huge film,” he says. “I’m happy to be a part of it.” –ivory m. jones
