Robert Avery never had any intentions of breaking into the mixtape game. Just a few years ago, the German-born, Decatur, Ga.-raised emcee was a standout on the gridiron at Fort Valley State University. A self-proclaimed realist, Avery knew there would be no future for him in the NFL and he began spending days and nights at the school’s mass communications department, where he fell in love with radio and eventually landed a spot with the Dirty Boyz of Macon.
Now back in Atlanta, Avery is better known by his alias, DJ Holiday, 107.9 in-house DJ and the newest member of the Aphilliates Music Group. Though his plunge into the mixtape world was not by design, Holiday will tell you that his newest promotion should not be a surprise to anyone. “At the end of the day, Drama, Cannon and Sense recognized my whole movement as far as what I had going for Atlanta, being like the most celebrated underground DJ, so it kind of worked out in my favor,” he says.
Few would disagree.
While working five to six parties in a week, Holiday is currently working on projects with Yo Gotti and Gucci Mane as well as building his own brand, 2G Entertainment. “Drama, he’s the king by far — the emperor, but at the end of the day, they knocked him, they slowed him down, but people are still going to [want mixtapes],” he says. “[Like Drama], I want to be known as that person that when you come through Atlanta, you’ve got to come holler at me because I break records.”gavin philip godfrey
