R&B Group
When the Harrell brothers, who compose R&B quintet ‘Brutha’ were given the chance to sing for mega-producer Jermaine Dupri, he was so impressed with their a cappella performance that he devised a once in a lifetime challenge for them. They’d have eight days to develop a stage show to perform in front of Atlanta’s musical elite at their very own showcase — sink or swim.
The brothers immediately teamed up with a top-notch choreographer and an A-list vocal coach before commencing the Brutha Bootcamp.
“We’d wake up and do the morning things, then head straight to the dance studio over at Marvelous [Enterprises] and rehearse for anywhere from 4 to 6 hours,” explains JR, the quiet, bad boy of the group. “If we had a studio session at night, we’d go home, wash up, rest for a little bit or go straight to the studio. [We would spend] from 6 to 10 hours [in] the studio every day. ”
The entire experience was documented and developed into a one-hour reality TV special. The Harrell’s bond is tested as cameras catch the brothers when tensions flair with their uncle-manager, and the group struggles to maintain their grueling schedule.
“We’ve been doing this for so many years and have struggled to get into the business.

We want to touch people with our story and have them fall in love with us,” explains Anthony, the second oldest and the group’s chef. “The thing that sets us apart from every other group is we’re really focused on our a cappella. We like to sing a lot of a cappella in our live show and we like to prove that we can really sing.”
