Gospel Singer

He has spent a total of 500 weeks on the Billboard charts. He produced four of Billboard’s top five gospel songs of 2007. Donald Lawrence is one of the most respected producers, songwriters and directors in gospel music.
This year, he equipped the world with the knowledge that “The Blessing of Abraham” was over their lives. The song spent 18 weeks in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts. If that wasn’t enough, he told the world that sometimes when no one will do it for you, it’s up to you to “Encourage Yourself,” which spent 13 weeks atop the Billboard charts.
“It’s a good feeling to know not only is your work being acknowledged, but it’s a great feeling to know that the projects that you’ve worked on for other people have helped them go forward,” says Lawrence.
During the Stellar Awards weekend in Nashville, Tenn., Lawrence’s label, EMI Gospel, paid homage to his stellar performance in every area of music from production to mentorship.
“I like to teach my students about being a smart musician,” he says. “I tell them, ‘I already know you can sing. Let’s teach you how to understand business economics; what publishing is; what a royalty point really means. Let’s teach you to know when you spend your budget what you are spending it on.’ ”
Although he has recorded his final album with the Tri-City Singers, ending a 15-year relationship with the dynamic choir, Lawrence isn’t finished. His new group, the Merrills, is slated to release an album before the end of the year. –jessica l. johnson
