Singer-songwriter Alexis Puentes aka Alex Cuba belies clichés of how a Cuban singer should sound. His mellow voice easily encapsulates “soul,” rather than approximating the commanding singing that frequently complements large Cuban ensembles. Many of these cuts are sparse and lovely, with Cuba’s singing in Spanish accompanied by little more than the guitar. Others feature electric guitars and percussion, but the laid-back vibe is always present. – forrest green III
