aesop rock- none shall pass
Definitive Jux
Ultra-wordy MC Aesop Rock returns with None Shall Pass, his fifth proper album. Over an eclectic sonic backdrop, Rock's verbose wordplay still can be equal parts stunning and stupefying. When it works, such as in the call-and-response opening salvo, "Keep Off the Lawn," Rock's words form a densely rewarding puzzle; when it doesn't, as on the bitter narrative "Fumes," Rock becomes impenetrable in his own wordy mind. A strong set that will please longtime fans, but Rock still may need to shave a few syllables off his 16 bars.
