International Recording Artist, Naturally 7
It is doubtful that many American music fans
recognize the name Naturally 7, but for Rod
Eldridge and his bandmates the goal is simple.
"The goal is [to] get back home. We want get back
home and expose people to what we are doing,"
says Eldridge.
Started in New York City in 1998 as a gospel a
cappella group who was once signed by Tommy
Mottola, Naturally 7 made noise early in their
career winning national a cappella competitions
and doing over 200 college shows a year. After
their Sony deal fell through, founder, Roger
Thomas rallied his troops and the group decided
to experiment with what they call, "vocal play," in
which every member of the band uses their voice
as an instrument. Without actually using any
drums, guitars or keyboards, Naturally 7 offers listeners
something completely different.
After a few years of making hit records in
Europe and South Africa, Naturally 7 is ready to
tackle the formulaic U.S. market. They've already
opened for John Legend and will perform at the
Montreux Jazz Festival in Underground Atlanta
during Labor Day weekend. Slowly, but surely,
they're coming along.
"In the American market - most people seem
scared to try something new," says Eldridge.
"They tend to believe that the American consumer
is so much different than these other consumers.
When we get on stage in front of the
audience, it's the same response no matter where
we are."
"If anyone sees us live, they'll believe," he says.
"We don't care who it is. We don't care if you're 8
or 80, blind, crippled or crazy - we're going to
hook you." -
