Acoustic guitarist, Earl Klugh, has been in the game for a while now, getting his first sessions with various artists in the early seventies. But he shows no signs of falling qualitatively with his 27th album as a leader. The Spice of Life is loaded with accessible tunes in which Klugh displays masterful phrasing, often joined by lovely string arrangements. His twitchy take on Thelonious Monk’s “Bye Ya” is one of the best offerings on the record.
