"For some people, when [they] paint, everything around [them] disappears like a meditation," says David G. Reason. "[When] I paint outside of Starbucks, [everything] around me disappears and then when I snap out of it, eight people are standing there."
Those don't sound like the words of a former Savannah State University student who majored in engineering. In fact, if someone would've told Reason a couple of years ago that he would be an amazing painter, he probably wouldn't have believed them.
"I never saw myself doing artwork," he confesses. "I've been drawing all my life. The first thing I remember drawing [was] 'The Flintstones.' It was never something I wanted to do. I just drew for myself when I couldn't express myself any other way or I felt I couldn't talk to [anyone]. I had one notebook. I started going to WalMart and getting cheap comic books. I would find an image and try to duplicate it. I didn't know too much about art; I still don't know anything about art."
Support from close family and friends finally inspired Reason to take his talent seriously.
"At Savannah State, I finally took an intro to art class. We went to a photo exhibition for Chester Higgins Jr., and I saw his photo 'The Door of No Return.' I stared at it for 30 minutes; it kind of did something to me. I think ever since that day I've been humbly trying to [be] recognized as creative and make it my source of income.
