At a time when many rappers reject the “backpacker” title, Virginia-bred rapper Skilz readily embraces it, naming his third outing The Million Dollar Backpack. Featuring production by the likes of Kwamé, DJ Jazzy Jeff, ?uestlove and James Poyser, Skillz gives fans the same spitfire lyrics that made him an underground favorite. “Sick,” “So Far So Good” (feat. Common) and “Where I Been” are album standouts. Although he stumbles a bit, the third time’s the charm for the Okayplayer fav. –ivory m. jones
