An artist is arguably one of the closest things to God. The ability to actualize vivid images using only the power of one's mind is truly a divine skill.
"You can't get along without art, whether you realize it or not," explains Maurice Evans. "Art affects every single thing that you do. You go to an artist to interpret for you. That's for everything from the design of your computer to the design of your car - [to] forks and knives. Those are designed by artists. As far as visual art is concerned, that's just as important."
Art also has the power to alter moods. A peek into Maurice Evans' collection and you are immediately transfixed by the rich, cool colors, where rhythmic figures and sublime contours take you back to the jazz age through his "Colour of Jazz" collection.
Evans is also known for his mixed-media folk art, where shapely female models sometimes take on birdlike qualities, being adorned with feathers and beaks and their limbs becoming wheels.
"Those are live models. They start off as body painting and then I do a photography session with them," says Evans. "Then from there, I come up with a new concept for them and turn it into a painting. A painting is usually done on wood; then I shape it as something like a birdhouse. Sometimes they have motors in them as well. So, [there are] little mechanical things going on in them as well."
Evans' works are available at 659 Auburn Avenue Unit G4. He will be holding an open house July 20-29.
