The opening track on Lifecycle, “Falken’s Maze,” makes you reminisce about the “Cosby Show” days when Heathcliff Huxtable would jam to the energizing and rhythmic musical potpourri that has been boxed in the genre called jazz. Guest artist Mike Stern, funks things up with his eclectic guitar tunes that complement the Yellowjacket’s Bob Mintzer’s refined oeuvre on “Maze, Yahoo and I Wonder.” The mellow sound of “Measure of a Man” is absent Stern, but is a nice wind down track. Expect big things from Stern and the Jackets on tour this summer. -soul goddess
