Portishead - Third
Mercury
A lot has happened in pop culture Portishead’s last studio album, 1997’s Portishead. Teen pop, rap-metal, and the garage rock revival have all come and gone; but Portishead’s uniquely detached, but emotional trip-hop is as effective as ever — with a few tweaks. The late ‘90s pastiche-style has given way to new millenium bells and whistles, but vocalist Beth Gibbons is still eerily morose and beautiful on cuts like “Silence” and “Hunter.” Third is a satisfying return from one of indie electronica’s most beloved acts.
