Guilty Simpson/Ode to the Ghetto

Stones Throw

At a time when rap music has taken on a decidedly light-hearted feel, Detroit’s Guilty Simpson stands out from the pack with his aggressive flow and knack for storytelling. He fluidly weaves tales of police brutality on “Pigs,” bespeaks the perils of street life on “Footwork” and vocalizes love on “Kinda Live.” Simpson’s spit-fire delivery coupled with production by Madlib, Oh No, Black Milk, James “Dilla” Yancey and D12’s Denaun “Proof” Porter, will certainly have hard-core rap fans asking for more. -ivory m. jones
