It goes without saying that there would be no gangsta rap as we know it, without Kool G Rap. An incredible talent with a natural ability for street poetry, the New York native made tales of guns, drugs and thugs sound more like vivid film noir than just simple words on wax. This EP follows the same formula that made KGR a success during his days with the Juice Crew on tracks like “On the Rise Again” and “With a Bullet.” KGR even employs the talents of production legends Marley Marl and DJ Premier in an attempt to resurrect that vintage sound. Overall, there’s nothing you haven’t heard here, but for die-hard fans, this is a must-have. –gavin philip godfrey
