Behind legendary artists like the Godfather of Soul James Brown, and the Kings of Funk George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, was a brilliant saxophonist named Maceo Parker. These musicians had the good fortune of working with this heralded sax player, who recently joined Dennis Chambers, Rodney Curtis, and the German band WDR to release Roots & Grooves. This two-disc CD serves as a tribute to Ray Charles with a few vocals from Parker. The second disc is a platform for Parker to demonstrate his musical prowess as he fuses R&B, soul and funk. –yvette caslin
