AfterDark Films

Here is a film about a guy named Zia (Patrick Fugit), who commits suicide after his girlfriend breaks up with him. Instead of dying, he goes to a place where others who have committed suicide live as well. After some time in this drab afterlife where no one smiles, Zia learns that his woman missed him so much that she killed herself as well. He then decides to go looking for her. This is a unique twist on the romantic comedy. There is a religious orthodoxy behind the film's premise, which is a weakness, but it's so subtly stated that it shouldn't disturb most viewers. More profoundly, the central issue is given a shallow view. All of those points aside, it's still a flick that reminds one that life is for the living, and a smile is an easy thing. - forrest green III
