Erik Kernan (Josh Hartnett) is a sportswriter who saves a homeless man from getting beaten up by a group of raging college kids. Afterwards, Erik learns this man is actually boxing legend Bob Satterfield (Samuel L. Jackson), otherwise known as "Champ." Erik takes the opportunity to resurrect "Champ's" story with zeal. As Erik gets to work, he goes on a personal journey, reexamining his own life and his relations with his family. That's right, folks, it's a movie based on a black character that really ends up being about white characters! Still, the emotions in the film are effectively and sincerely rendered, and watching it will almost certainly cause most men to reflect on themselves and their relationship with their fathers. -forrest green III
